Discovering and Experiencing the Old and the New

Bahrain – which means two seas (sweet and salty)– is dichotomous in its meaning and culture. It perfectly blends between its old heritage and the new digital era. Bahrain is considered an important regional economic and financial hub and is home to a large number of global financial services companies. The Kingdom also laid out a comprehensive and integrated economic vision that aims to make its economy more sustainable by the year 2030.

The earliest human settlement in Bahrain’s islands dates back almost 4,000 years. Over that time, it was inhabited by a series of different civilizations, starting with Dilmun, then Tylos, and finally the Islamic period. Its strategic position has made it one of the region’s most significant commercial crossroads for over 4,000 years as a trading hub and route for the pearl-diving industry.

Explore this history of Bahrain from 3000BCE to the current day. “Qal’at al-Bahrain is a typical tell – an artificial mound created by many successive layers of human occupation. The strata of the 300 × 600 m will testify to continuous human presence from about 2300 BC to the 16th century AD. About 25% of the site has been excavated, revealing structures of different types: residential, public, commercial, religious, and military. They testify to the importance of the site, a trading port, over the centuries. On the top of the 12 m mound there is the impressive Portuguese fort, which gave the whole site its name, qal’a (fort). The site was the capital of the Dilmun, one of the most important ancient civilizations of the region. It contains the richest remains inventoried of this civilization, which was hitherto only known from written Sumerian references.”
